OCAS (OnderzoeksCentrum voor de Aanwending van Staal – is an advanced R&D centre active in metallurgy, coating and application development, providing metal based products and services. OCAS speeds up the R&D processes of its customers through a specialised multi-disciplinary approach combined with innovative testing methodologies. OCAS is equipped with state-of-the-art R&D tools and facilities in its laboratories in Zelzate and Zwijnaarde (Belgium). The research centre valorizes know-how by product and solution development. OCAS has a highly qualified team of over 140 researchers and engineers with an international orientation.

In order to focus even more on customers and technology, Ocas is currently looking forward to extend its team with a competent (m/f) : 

Business Development Engineer

Identifying project opportunities for research and development partnerships  



  • It is your objective to prospect and target new customers for the R&D services and partnership programs that Ocas offers, in conjunction with the Technology Managers. You activate your own network and approach partners proactively in search for those new business opportunities.
  • You identify business expansion options in niches and (co-)generate proposals for the contents of (joint-industry) projects incl. pricing levels. You also generate service contracts and make them happen through effective follow-up.
  • In order to adjust your business development actions and/or approach you follow-up the latest trends and perform regular market analysis. You measure customer satisfaction and act proactively towards customers to stimulate recurrent business.
  • Inside the organization you are the voice of the customer and you deliver tactic and/or strategic input from the customer or market side.
  • With focus on effective realizations you track progress, keep budget control and perform adequate reporting to the management through regular documented input. You also propose adequate projects, internal or external communication or actions if required.
  • You initially report functionally to the Sr. Business Development Manager and it is your intention and ambition to gradually take an autonomous role.



  • You hold a Master’s degree with a broad technical background. You have at least 5 years’ experience in a business-related role for innovative products or services in an international B2B environment, preferably in the metals industry.
  • You have a reputation for developing close customer relations, driving negotiations towards a project start and are known for your reliability and endurance in this context. You are well connected and are pro-active in making proposals, picking up useful information and networking with your research contacts.
  • Whilst you have affinity with a R&D environment, you have real business sense and you show a high level of motivation to discover "new grounds". You are able to build bridges, knowing how to turn technical features also into clear tangible benefits.
  • You have a mature and dynamic personality, you take the initiative and can work independently. You present yourself as an eloquent communicator, you know how you can share information in a controlled way to gain relevant information for your projects without breaching confidentiality. Whilst you work in a diversified team of experts and have a broad customer base, you also have a pallet of strong soft skills such as the ability to listen and show empathy
  • Your respect for strict deontology and confidentiality rules is essential to our business. You are willing to travel for shorter periods on a regular basis. You are fluent in English and Dutch, experience with multiple European cultures is a plus.
