Software Development Manager - H4 (£44,559 - £53,175) plus £2,166 London Weighting and a discretionary market supplement

This position offers an opportunity to contribute to an exciting period of change at Brunel University London. The IS Directorate is approximately 150 strong and plays a crucial role in supporting around 13,500 students and 4,000 staff. This role is critical to the organisation wide success at a time where transformation and expansion across the University is top of the agenda. This role reports to the Head of Development and Application Services, a member of the senior IS leadership team. You will be required to shape this discipline to meet the ambition of the evolving IS Directorate in delivering the University's digital strategy.

This new role is a fantastic opportunity to assume accountable for all software development activities within Information Services; leading, developing and promoting the Software development unit across the University; taking line management responsibility for the Development team, and make a significant impact on the future direction. You will ensure seamless cohesion with the wider University vision and goals, all underpinned by continuous improvement, best practice and project management skills.

The main responsibilities will be to devise, establish and continually improve a strong, flexible and effective software development and delivery capability within Information Services to meet the needs of the University. Project customers will include all unites within Information Services, all Colleges, Institutes, Services Departments & Students.

Must have thorough knowledge of the full Software Development lifecycle; object orientated development practices and design principles; experience of applying Agile and Lean principles, knowledge of Data Protection and GDPR; understanding of code branching techniques; project delivery methods (e.g. PRINCE2 etc.); experience of building and enhancing accessible applications; continuous integration, deployment and delivery methods; unit and component testing including automation and supporting tools.

Demonstrable hands on experience of delivering large and technically complex web and desktop applications; development of Web services and/or applications using Microsoft and/or Linux platforms; hands on experience in the use of SQL Server or Oracle database platforms as part of web or application development; experience of source code tools such as Team Foundation Server and Subversion.

Main Duties: Leadership of the Software development unit

Provide inspiring leadership for the Software Development unit. To oversee, manage and directly participate in delivery and support of the Software development activities across the full software development lifecycle, acting as an evangelist and authority for Software development best practice, establishing a centre of excellence for the discipline, positively impacting upon the wider department, directorate and University.

Line management and responsibility for professional development of direct reports, coach / mentor individuals / small groups within the team and wider University.

Lead and manage the support, development, configuration and maintenance of all web and desktop application systems (including backend database and infrastructure).

Ensure the introduction and adoption of industry standard Software Development approaches, standards, practices & processes across the full software development lifecycle to meet the needs of the University.

Build and maintain excellent working relationships with key stakeholders across the University and wider Higher Education community.

Manage supplier relationships as appropriate to the delivery of Software development across the University.
